Technological and information sciences have advanced by leaps and bounds in recent years. Can you imagine a life without the internet, without a smartphone or without quick access to information? However, 4 billion people in the world live without access to the Internet, and the shadow of gender inequality also lurks in this field : we talk about the digital gender gap . When we talk about the digital divide we are referring to the inequality that exists between people, companies or certain geographical areas in terms of access to ICT (information and communication technologies). Without this access, a part of the population lacks the so-called “digital skills”, so necessary today. If we specify the concept of “digital divide” more specifically and stop to analyze these differences by comparing the opportunities of men and women, we come across the digital gender gap.
This concept clearly refers to the inferiority that women have with respect to men in access to this type of information, education and knowledge of ICT. Have you ever considered it? According to UNESCO, factors such as geographical area, economic resources, sex, age, education or language are determining factors, and become aspects that directly influence the digital gender gap. First digital gender gap The first digital gender gap began in the 1990s , when ICT began to gain ground in daily life and economic, educational and social aspects had a direct impact on the difficulty of access to ICT for women. This is the question we have asked ourselves, so we want to launch a series of proposals that we consider essential so that men and women have the same opportunities in terms of access and training in ICT: Root out gender roles and stereotypes that cause girls, from a very young age, to lose interest in matters related to technology because they are “manly.” Carry out concrete actions by governments so that ICT, Internet and new technologies reach as many homes in the world as possible. Promote digital literacy in those places where women are far from ICT. Create a social and collaborative awareness , starting by donating equipment, perhaps obsolete in developed countries but very necessary in developing countries.
